Be A Professional Modern Dancer

In the early 20th century, Martha Graham captivated and shocked audiences with her daring new dance movement: She made alterations to traditional ballet, focusing on emotion rather than structured steps.Fast forward to the present. Today, modern dance is emotionally focused, with the dancers choosing the topic before choreographing. They often invent new steps and focus mainly on the body and its relationship to gravity. Watching modern dance performances leave the audience with powerful images to combine with strong emotions. You’ve always loved it--now here's do it:

Instructions

1. Take ballet lessons. Every modern dancer needs to have some ballet technique to help with muscular strength and posture (see Resources below to find lessons closest to you).

2. Pursue a Major, or at least a Minor in a modern dance Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program. Research various colleges and universities that offer the course, and apply for admission (see Resources below for colleges that offer these courses in both the U.S. and Canada).

3. Be prepared to audition as part of the application process at your chosen college. This is typically a prerequisite for admission at most colleges. The auditions work in several parts: technique; ability to improve; a 1 to 2 minute solo piece that you have choreographed. You will also have an in-person interview with the instructors.

4. Enroll in the program once you get admission. In-between classes, stay informed on modern dance by articles or watch videos related to the world of modern dance (see Resources below). It is also good practice as a professional dancer to practice yoga or Pilates to keep limber.

5. Complete your BFA program in modern dance, and research the different career options available to you as a professional dancer. You can, for example, join an established dance company, teach, choreograph or even start your own dance company. The best chance of getting a first job is with a large dance or opera company (see Resources below for a link to international ballet and dance companies all over the world).
