Blend Watercolor Markers

Similar shades of watercolor markers can be blended for tonal effects.

Watercolor markers are pens with felt tips. Instead of ink, though, the pens have water-soluble paint in them. This paint can be used much like regular watercolor paint, but in marker form it is much easier to control. You can use these types of art supplies in several ways. You can draw like you would with a regular marker, or you can blend lines using a brush, which gives you much subtler tones.

Instructions

1. Make your initial sketch on watercolor paper using a 2H pencil, which has a hard lead but makes lightly colored marks. It is important to use a pencil with hard lead so that the markings don't smudge. The light coloring of the marks ensures that they won't show through your painting.

2. Dip your watercolor marker into a glass of water and start to paint your sketch.

3. Dip a second watercolor marker into the glass of water and paint near the first color.

4. Sweep a dry brush across the two colors, using a very light stroke. Repeat the strokes until the colors are blended to your liking.
