Careers In Makeup Artistry

Makeup artists must have steady and confident hands.

Makeup artists work in a wide range of settings. Some work in department stores while others work on movie sets. While there is no required education or certification in the field, many people attend cosmetology schools to widen their skill set and break into the industry.

In film and theater, makeup artists apply makeup for actors and actresses in movies and theater production. A wide variety of skills are used in this industry; most makeup artists specialize in one area. Different styles include special effects makeup, costume makeup and body makeup.

Personal and event services

Wedding makeup

Some makeup artists work with clients for events, such as weddings or public speaking engagements. These makeup artists sometimes work for companies or in salons, but some also freelance for clients who contact them directly.

Cosmetic companies

Cosmetic companies employ makeup artists to work as consultants for customers in order to help them find makeup shades and formulas that work for them. These makeup artists sometimes work out of their home or meet with customers one-on-one. Some makeup artists also work at makeup counters in department stores and help customers find makeup that works for them.
